Apartment Hunting is Scary

If any of you have been following me on twitter, you’ll know that I’ve been looking for an apartment in LA.
A couple nights ago, feeling desperate, I turned to Craigs List.

Bad idea.

I emailed a few placed that looked promising — not too cheap, not too pricey, close to where I want to live. These are the creepy emails I received in response (copied and pasted directly from their emails):

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to me,I am very glad you are interested in renting my apt.I am single, very hard working man, religious and business man.I am now located in Adelphi,Maryland on a business trip and won’t be returning to the apt until a year.

I am looking for responsible roomate that is going to be taking good care of my apt while i am away and i will be trusting you that you are going to be taking good care of my apt as i left it,the apartment is for long term and short term lease is also acceptable.

The rent $550 per month,Security Deposit $300 which include the utilities such as Water/Sewer,heat,hydro,gas,internet access e.t.c The Apartment is furnished.I will like you to tell me your experience with renting.I was wondering maybe i can send you the application form for you to fill out. Also i will like to know when you want to take possession of the apartment so that we can discuss how to get the keys and neccessary documents to you.

I await your prompt response ASAP.

Does something seem fishy about all this to you, too? They both have left the country? It’s screaming scam. I just regret the fact that they have my email address now…. I’ve decided to stick to friends and networks that I trust rather than using Craigs List in my apartment hunt. I’m looking at 2 places tonight, btw. Wish me luck!

Chelsie and I set up two email addresses: one that we distribute to friends, use for church business, etc. And then we set up one that we know will get spam. We used this on our wedding registries, whenever restaurants ask for our email address, etc. I check that one every-so-often. Maybe something to think about. I’m glad you’ve got a good head on your shoulders and didn’t fall for the scammage!

You know, I was thinking that I know a girl that moved there not very long ago. I could ask her if she knows of some nice places if you want. Just let me know?

However, in the mean time stay away from Craig’s List…=)

wow. that is *scary* um… a picture?!

have you tried using westside rentals? you have to pay a fee (but that’s probably better – instant filter) also, it’s called “westside” but it actually covers the entire area.

good luck. looking for an apt is rough. that’s why i’ve been in the same place for a while now!

Thanks Meg. I’ll let you know if I can’t find anything through my church — they have good resources.
Thanks for the tip on Westside Rentals. I’d never heard of them before, so I’ll have to check them out.
In the meantime, I’m definitely steering clear of the Craigslist crazies :)
