I was so excited when Ryan called me up to let me in on his secret plans to give Ana Maria her ring and ‘officially’ propose. We went to Liberty Park and walked over to a location I scouted out before they arrived. Then, I told Ryan that I needed a new flash card for my camera and asked if he’d grab it from my car. I then proceeded to take photos of the unsuspecting Ana Maria who almost spoiled the surprise a few times by turning around. But he was able to walk behind her, surprise her with a dozen roses and give her a gorgeous ring. What a special moment to be a part of!
After spending a little more time at the park, we headed off to some amazing locations. The first one I cannot take credit for because my friend Natalie thought of it when we were planning a photo shoot that never happened. When Ana Maria and Ryan told me they wanted something different, I knew that George’s Architectural Salvage would be perfect. The piles of sinks, old bathtubs lying around, and random junk were even more fun to use than I imagined.
We raced out to the Great Salt Lake before the sun set and captured some great moments. I loved how they were willing to lay in the salt and play in the water. Ryan and Ana Maria are both ballroom dancers so I made sure to have them show off some of their moves. I apologize there are a lot of photos in this post….since we went to so many locations, it was next to impossible to narrow it down any more than I did. Hope you enjoy!

I am not sure what the fascination is with the urban backgrounds are but I don’t think the majority of them work and for engagements the focus is the people not the odd stuff in the background. It does work for fashion or editorial but I truly believe portraiture needs to be great pictures that are ‘timeless’ and not seeking to be just different. Urban enviroment shots seems to be a ‘thing’ and too many people are trying to do something in the name of ‘different’. Why not try to make more of the beautiful and amazing shots you did like at the Great Salt Lake. Those were amazaing! Just know I do admire your work, I am just not a fan of the trend towards junk yards. To each is their own.

Thanks everyone for such nice comments.
‘Friend’, I wish you would say you who are, especially if you’re going to leave me criticism. No one should be afraid of saying what they want. Please don’t leave anonymous comments
I appreciate your honesty, but I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I do the urban backgrounds because I WANT my clients to feel like models. I want it to feel like a fashion shoot. Where I choose the locations totally depends on the client, but why should I always shoot at the same, beautiful locations? That would be boring. I think there is beauty in juxtaposing beautiful people in an ‘ugly’ environment. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Yup. LOVE that architectural graveyard place. AWESOME. This shoot is up on there on my favs list!
in regards to our ‘friends’ comment, I asked stacy to pick some locations that were unique. We were actually going to do it at a burned down house, so doing a shoot at a junk yard is actually rather on the conservative end. Stacy did exactly what we wanted and boy did she do it well! The photos were exactly what we imagined. Thanks, Stace!

Hi Stacey, Your colors are absolutely gorgeous in this engagement shoot. I love the blue in the water and the mountains, the way they got into it, and what they’re wearing with what they’re doing. The black + white of her jumping on his back should be an award winning photo. I love the hair in her face, the emotion, the moment. Thanks so much far sharing. Michael

Hey Stacey! These look amazing! I love the pictures you’ve done on the salt flats. I’ve seen pictures similar – but the quality of yours is far beyond what I’ve seen around here. I’ll defefinitely keep recommending you!
