Yesterday I was introduced to Thao. She was in town and played at Kilby Court, an awesome local venue. Thao is an incredible performer — you feel the rhythms just by watching her — and her music is brilliant. I became an instant fan. Some of my favorites are Feet Asleep, Chivalry, Bag of Hammers, and Tallymarks.

Also, you should check out Tune Yards. Merrill is a singer/songwriter who plays a miniature guitar (I don’t know the correct name for it) and uses a loop. At first I was a little skeptical, but I love her rhythms and vocal talents. She has some great African influences and even sings in Swahili. Listen to her song named Fiya, followed by Hatari (my 2 faves).
