I have been trying to find an afternoon to drive up to my favorite place — the Spiral Jetty — and this Saturday worked out perfectly. I made the 2 1/2 hour journey with my friends April, Steve and Katie, none had ever been there before.
While driving there, I always get anxious and excited. Anxious because I always worry I’m cutting it too close and won’t make it in time to enjoy the sunset. And excited because during the last hour of driving, the scenery gets better and better, leading up to the spectacular views at the Great Salt Lake. I seriously turn into a crazy nut, running around trying to capture different things, hurrying as fast as I can before the sun goes down. I feel like a child at Christmastime!
I love it there because every time is a new experience: water levels are constantly changing, there’s always a new sunset to behold, and the colors in the sky and earth always take my breath away. Plus, it feels like you’re walking on an icy lake, but without freezing temperatures….and it feels like you could be on another planet…
This year was awesome because I was able to take long exposure with my digital camera for the first time! The first two images are of my friend April walking around — I love the motion in them. And, the last image was a 10 minute long exposure. It definitely doesn’t hold up nearly as beautifully as film, but it’s amazing to see what our eyes can’t see once it is dark.
P.S. Thanks to Steve for letting me borrow his fish eye lens! I need to get me one of those…

We were lucky enough to reschedule the Ott Family’s session on such a beautiful fall day! Everything was perfect: the beautiful golden trees downtown, comfortable temperature, and cloudless blue sky. Even the smog made a gorgeous, diffused light! I had such a great time with the Otts.
Michael, a rambunctious 2-year old couldn’t stay in one spot too long, but it was fun to run around and watch him play and interact with his family. Little Michael is the most easy-going baby I have ever met, just chillin’ and taking it easy. He only got fussy at the end because he was hungry. By the end, the sky looked incredible! I was glad that Michael cooperated until the very end

On Saturday evening, after my Halloween photo shoot, I was scheduled to take the Ott Family photo. Liz happens to be an old childhood friend. We went to Elementary, Junior High, and High School together, but have lost touch the past few years. How excited I was when she called to set up her session. I hadn’t even seen or met her boys and they were darling!
Liz wanted to get some great shots out by the Great Salt Lake. As I was driving out West toward the lake, the sky in the East was beautiful and clear and was creating a beautiful light out West where dark skies loomed ahead. I was hopeful that the rain would hold for at least 30 minutes so we could get in some good shots. Instead of 30 minutes, we got 2. Before we even started, the rain started coming. It was windy and icy, not a good combination for two young boys. We decided it would be better to reschedule….Here are a few of the pictures I took.
This is the picture I took when I first arrived at the Lake (looking out toward Antelope Island) while I was waiting for the Ott’s to arrive. Beautiful, isn’t it?

Saturday afternoon, my friend Natalie and I had our first day of Halloween pictures. It was a cold, rainy day so we had to improvise and take the photos inside her house. Good thing she has an awesome brick wall and brown wall that worked perfectly.
These kids were so cute! I loved all of their costumes.
Here are the ones that came for my studio plus her boys Crew and Raleigh, who helped while I was setting up my lights. (Natalie will post those who came for her on her blog).

Last Wednesday, I went up American Fork Canyon to have my last campfire of the year. It had been raining off and on all day, but we were hopeful because as we drove to the canyon, there was a break in the clouds and you could see blue sky. I was excited to get some pictures of the fall leaves and scenery. It got dark super fast and then proceeded to rain and quickly turn to snow. I was glad for the few fall pictures I got…and I was glad I was wearing shoes and socks because it got quite chilly. We had a few inches of snow on our cars when we were finished.
It was fun to photograph the river with a long exposure to get the movement of the water. And, I enjoyed using my flash at the campfire, which created some great effects! The last photo was my final attempt to photograph the snow….feeble, I know.

This Saturday the 20th and next Wednesday the 24th, come on over to get a picture of your kids in their Halloween Costume! It’s from 1-4, it only costs $15, and you get a free 5×7 picture of your child.

Every month, I have the opportunity of visiting with Grace. This is definitely one of the highlights that I look forward to, especially since both of my grandmother’s have passed on. Grace always has the best stories, jokes, and advice. And, she is truly interested in my life and my photography.
Last week was her birthday and she INSISTED that I not bring her anything (after I offered to come over with a gift, of course). Having wanted to photograph her for sometime now, I thought this was the perfect opportunity. Yesterday, she got all dressed up and ready for our photo shoot. She was surprised when I told her how many pictures I could take with my camera and that it was okay if she accidentally blinked, talked, or moved when I took a picture because I could just delete it later.
A few things that I really wanted to capture is the beautiful painting of her husband whom she talks about with such love and respect; the ‘Say Grace’ sign that her great-granddaughter picked out; her prized albums filled with old newspapers and photos that showcase her marriage, children, and everything about her family; her beautiful rings; and Grace’s amazing eyes full of life, love, and wisdom.
I hope these photos can be a treasure for her family and posterity.

When I left my house on Saturday afternoon for Ashley and Chase’s engagement session, it was pouring rain. Luckily, the storm was moving East into the mountains and so we just barely missed the bulk of the downpour. It rained off and on throughout the shoot, but these two were such great sports about it. We even decided to go to Wal-Mart to grab an umbrella, which added a nice element to the photos.
I had such a blast with Ashley and Chase! They are seriously super cute together, they acted natural in front of the camera, and you can just feel their chemistry. I can’t wait for Ashley’s bridals and their wedding in December… Oh, and I could not narrow these images down anymore. Hopefully you guys don’t feel any of them are repetitive because I just loved them all!

I must admit, yesterday I was a little worried that it would be too windy, cold, or rainy for Carli and Bill’s wedding…but it was gorgeous! Yes, it was a little cloudy, but it really couldn’t have been any better. Bill and Carli were married at the Timpanogos Temple. We had such a fun time going around the Temple to photograph the two of them, especially when we ventured across to a field complete with hay bales and horses. I am in love with the pictures we took over there!
Their reception was at the Northampton House in American Fork, which is an old chapel with a beautiful exterior. I love the stained glass window in front…I actually love so many pictures from their wedding that it was super hard for me to narrow them down for you…so I hope you enjoy!

Isn’t this cake amazing? It looked and smelled amazing. Probably one of my favorite cakes so far…
