Ryan + Chelsea + Kate

Do you all remember back in January when I launched Three Winks Studio’s first Sweepstakes? Well, Ryan and Chelsea won a free photo session with $50 of print credit.

We had their photo shoot tonight. It was so nice outside and the location was awesome with beautiful flowers and trees. Kate was getting tired and fussy, so it took a little work from her energetic parents to get her happy, but I think we got some fabulous images that really show off her personality. And, it was her birthday today — she is officially one! Thanks Ryan and Chelsea. I had a great time :)

Memorial Day Weekend

I can’t believe it’s been a week since I’ve posted! The reason is that I went camping with my family for Memorial Day Weekend. We were gone from Thursday until Monday, so I lost 5 days of posting. Good news is that I had a lot of shooting down in beautiful Southern Utah. Hopefully you guys won’t mind this HUGE post with TONS of pictures.

POSY LAKE

We stayed at Posy Lake, which is about 16 miles from Escalante, UT. It was a small little lake with a dock, all surrounded with aspen and pine trees. On Friday afternoon, I went for a walk with my mom, sister Sandy, and her two boys and we ended up going on a Lookout Hike with a fantastic view. My brother Skip went with me the next morning on a Sunrise hike. Man, that was amazing. It was so beautiful.

HELL’S BACKBONE + BOULDER, UT

On Saturday, we went on a drive through Hell’s Backbone, a small road that runs between two canyons. It was spectacular. These photos do not do it justice – the immensity and grandeur of these desert mountains was amazing. Next, we drove through the town of Boulder, which is an old, small town with some cool houses and barns. On the way back to camp, I snapped some more pics of the Utah landscape.

DEVIL’S GARDEN + HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK

For Sunday, we decided to drive to Hole-in-the-Rock. Just outside of Escalante, there is a 55 mile dirt road that takes you through beautiful open land with a magnificent row of mountains in the distance on both sides. On the way there, we stopped by Devil’s Garden, which is about 12 miles in. It’s made of up these amazing rock formations that are a brilliant deep orange against the rich blue sky. I wish we had been able to spend more time there, but we still had a long journey ahead of us. When we finally reached Hole-in-the-Rock, it looks and feels like you’re out in the middle of nowhere. A short walk will take you to the famous hole the pioneers took their wagons down years ago, which is now right next to Lake Powell. The water looked so gorgeous and made me want to go swimming. On the drive home, we encountered some cows being herded down the road. It definitely made things more interesting… Hope you like these pictures.

the FAM

Here are some pics of my family, mostly my nephews. James got so dirty right from the start. He’s only been walking for about a month, so he’s still a little wobbly. He loved finding rocks and throwing them, sometimes eating them, and he especially loved playing in the fire pit. Will was always willing to help out. He said this was the ‘best camping trip ever!’

I had so much fun spending time with my fam. Everyone was there except for my sister Stephanie’s husband Tim, and we missed him. I have such a wonderful family. I love you guys!

Glamorous Guinn

Tonight was AWESOME — I took pictures of Guinn.

We started out at her beautiful home that overlooks the Salt Lake Valley, then we headed downtown to find some fabulous, derelict buildings. It was a little colder than we would’ve liked, but Guinn was such a great sport and didn’t complain or even act like she was in need of her jacket, which she was. And, I need to give a special thanks to Tim and Heidi at Retrospect Studios who shared these fantastic locations with me yesterday.

Let me know what you think. Sorry there are so many, it was next to impossible to narrow it down more….Thanks for looking!

Metaphors of Nature

This morning I had a photo shoot that was somewhat of a continuation from last year…

Brian Croft creates 3-D artwork made mostly from objects found in nature – animal bones, bird feathers, shells, rocks, and many other such items. I was hired last year to photograph them for a coffee table book that highlighted his best and favorite work with some poetry. Now that the book is printed, Brian has some new artwork that will be in his 2nd edition that he wants to replace some of the older pieces.

I also received my copy of the book, entitled Metaphors of Nature. Here are a couple shots of the book and some of my favorites from today’s shoot. If you are interested in the book, you can email Brian @ croftb1@comcast.net.

What a Babe

I think I can pretty much call myself the luckiest photographer!

Tonight I photographed Renata (hey-nada), a beautiful Brazilian babe. I had such a blast. We went up in the hills behind my neighborhood because they won’t be green for too much longer…and the trees are pretty awesome-looking. Then, we drove downtown to some cool buildings I found. She looks fantastic and it was so hard for me to pick my favorite images. I just think she is gorgeous. Thanks Renata!

Birthday Bash, Riveting Ranch

Saturday evening, I had two fun activities to attend — my friends birthday bbq and a party at a ranch.

It’s always fun to see old friends and have an excuse to see each other. It seems like there isn’t enough time these days to always see each other or keep in touch as much as we’d like. So, we find excuses to get the gang together, and birthdays are one of these excellent plans ;) Happy Birthday to Jessica, April, and Mendy! Thanks for being such awesome friends to me. I love you guys!

P.S. The beautiful girl in most of these pictures is Namda (hope I spelled it right). She is half Tibetan and is simply adorable! Every time I see her, she is more and more darling.

Unfortunately, I had to leave the birthday party early…but I went to this awesome Young Single Adult Party up at a Ranch in Brown’s Canyon (close to Kamas, UT). It was such a beautiful evening. A big crowd went outside for some skeet shooting and then I went down into the fields to take some pictures of their horses. Horses are magnificent creatures and it was exciting to walk up close to them. Here are some of my favorites from the evening. Thanks to the Roger’s for sharing their Ranch with us!

Cityscapes at Night

Last night I went up to a hill above my house with a friend to take some night photos of the city. It was a moonless, beautiful, slightly breezy night. It was fun using my new S5 camera and seeing how wonderful it captured everything considering the long exposures. It brought me back to my days in school when I did an entire series of night landscapes, all shot with film. Those were the days!

The fun thing about digital, is that it is easier to play with the images in post-processing.

1- This first one is how I see things when I squint my eyes. You know, how the contrast is more defined — the blacks are richer and the highlights are intensified.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

2- This one seems more fitting for nighttime because it is more blue and cold, how it feels when I see it in my mind.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

3- This is pretty much what it looked like, with a little bit of warmth added to suggest a lively city. Would you agree that Salt Lake is lively or not? ;)
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

4- I love the richness of the dark, blue sky with the stars peeking through.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

5- Even though this one is similar to the one above, I toned down the colors to give it a ‘vintage’ look and feel. It almost feels like you’re looking through binoculars because of the intense vignetting on the top.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

6- I really like the subtle light of the city touching the sides of the mountains. It feels so peaceful and calm to me.

Beautiful Day for a Wedding

Today was a warm, beautiful, sunny day — perfect for Kristen and Lane’s wedding. With their friends and family gathered for this special occassion, you could see the joy emanating from these two. They love each other so much! As I said before when I did their engagement pictures, they are perfect for each other and they compliment one another so well. Plus, they both have such great sense of humors, so they are a delight to be with. Thanks for sharing this day with me!

I had such a great time with them, I ran home to show you guys all my favorite images. Also, check out their SLIDESHOW HERE.

Celebrating Marilyn

On Saturday night, I had the wonderful opportunity of photographing Marlilyn Smolka’s Retirement Dinner. It took place at the Dunn’s beautiful home which overlooks the Salt Lake Valley. Marilyn is leaving the University of Utah Orthopaedics Department after working there for over 20 years. It was a night filled with hugs, laughter, and reminiscing.

Here are some of my favorites from the night. CLICK HERE to view a SLIDESHOW with more images.

Kaelissa and Raymond

I experienced an amazing wedding today! Even though we faced freezing temperatures today outside at the Temple, it really was a beautiful day for Kaelissa, Raymond, and their families. After we survived the cold winds, we went to their reception which was magnificently decorated in yellow and white. And let me tell you, these guys know how to throw a party. The flowers were stunning, the music was awesome, the dancing was engaging, and the food was luscious! Everyone was so welcoming and friendly — thank you for sharing your special day with me! (And thanks to my friend Roger for including me. He is a fantastic videographer)
